JOÃO FÊNIX, singer songwriter

João Fênix released in July 2021 his seventh álbum entitled “Gotas de Sangue (Blood drops). His is an intimate and delicate rendition of gems of Brazilian popular music sided by the jazzy piano of Luiz Otavio, a blind and talented young lion of the Rio scene. The repertoire brings works of greats such as Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Baden Powell, Roberto Carlos, Dolores Duran, among others. A register that values João Fênix´s beautiful vocals and passion embrace of these great songs.

Brazilian singer songwriter was born in the Northern state of Pernambuco and has been based in Rio since the mid 1990s. Shortly after his arrival in the city he was hired for a musical “Os quatro carreirinhas (The four little lines)”, directed by well known TV director Wolf Maya in 1996. Their collaboration endured and Maya directed the singer´s first solo show which received very good reviews by the press and was one of the indicated time-out show for the O Globo, biggest Brazilian news outlet, having remained opened for the whole year of 1997.

Through the years, João Fênix has commuted between Rio and the USA, having lived in NY for 8 years. There he regularly performed as crooner of a Brazilian band which reached a headline in the New York Times. In Brazil he had in parallel another successful theater experience under the direction of avant-garde stage director Gerald Thomas.

A daring performer of a carefully repertoire, João Fênix maintains a solo career through the edgy sounds of his unique voice. His first álbum was released in 2001 produced by famed Brazilian guitarist Jaime Alem and featuring collabs such and Nana Vasconcellos and Ney Matogrosso called the attention of the critics having received excellent reviews.

Since then his releases have followed a relevant pattern of positive reviews and have shown the growth of his fan base. He also worked with alternate producers such as Jr Tostoi and Guilherme Kastrup. His second album named “Marfim (Ivory)” was released in 2003 and in 2011 came to the stores the live recording “Ciranda do mundo (Children´s Dances of the World)” featuring another MPB star singer songwriter Zé Ramalho. João returned the following year with “A foto onde eu quero estar (The photo I want to be in)” of 2012 with a number of authoral songs. Five years later he was nominated for the  Prêmio da Música Brasileira 2017 (Brazilian Music Award of 2017) as Best MPB álbum for his “De volta ao começo (Back to the start)”, released in 2016. “Minha boca não tem nome (My mouth has no name)” came to light in 2018, again with great reviews.
